A patio without shade gets used for about six weeks a year. Structure is what stretches the season at both ends, and it's usually the difference between a space people sit in and a space people look at.
Everything with a roof needs footings below the frost line and, in most of our towns, a permit. We pour to 42 inches, tie the posts down with proper anchors rather than surface brackets, and detail the connection where the structure meets a paved surface so water can't sit against a post base.
Cedar reads warmer and costs less up front; aluminium with a louvered roof costs more and does more, including closing when it rains. We'll show you both and be honest about the maintenance either one asks for.
