Concrete cracks. That isn't a defect, it's what the material does as it cures and as the ground moves under it. The job of a concrete contractor is to decide where the cracks go, which is what control joints are for.
Joints get laid out before the truck arrives, spaced no more than about ten feet apart and cut within the first day. Slabs are reinforced with fibre, mesh or #4 rebar depending on what's going on top of them, and everything structural sits on a footing below the 36-inch frost line.
We pour a 4,000 psi air-entrained mix on exterior work. Air entrainment is what lets the surface survive freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt, and it's the first thing dropped when someone is bidding a slab cheap.
