We plant the way we build: the part you can't see decides how it looks in five years. Most struggling shrubs on properties we're called to were planted too deep, into unamended clay, in a bed with no edge holding the mulch back.
Root flare goes at or slightly above finish grade, never below. Beds get dug out rather than mounded on top of existing lawn, amended with compost, and finished at two to three inches of mulch — not the six inches you see piled against trunks every spring.
Plant selection starts with the site rather than a catalogue. We'll tell you which things want more water than your soil will hold and which will outgrow the spot you've picked in four seasons.
