Hardscape is the largest thing most people build in a yard and the easiest to build badly, because the whole structure disappears the moment the surface goes down. Two patios can look identical on handover day and be four winters apart in lifespan.

Everything we lay sits on a proof-rolled subgrade, woven geotextile, and crushed stone compacted in three- to four-inch lifts — eight inches total for foot traffic, twelve for vehicles. Edge restraint is spiked at ten inches on centre so the field can't creep, and the whole surface falls an eighth of an inch per foot away from the building.

Retaining walls above four feet are engineered and geogrid-reinforced, with clean stone and filter fabric behind them. Walls fail from water pressure long before they fail from weight.
